Special grants are cash contributions for students who find themselves in an exceptionally serious financial situation caused by one or more events (e.g., death of a parent, the main breadwinner losing their job, serious illness of a family member, health emergency, etc.) that have compromised their ability to continue their studies normally.

The grant reserved for students enrolled or intending to enrol on degree courses at the University of Cagliari, on specialisation courses required to practise a profession (with the exception of courses in the medical field, as per Italian Legislative Decree no. 368 of 4 August 1999), PhD programs, courses at the Pontifical Theological Faculty of Sardinia and the Higher Institute of Religious Sciences (Cagliari campus), the State Music Conservatory of Cagliari, and the Verbum Higher School for Linguistic Mediators.

It is awarded through a competition process based on specific income and academic achievement requirements and the value awarded varies according to the student's residency status (on or off campus).

The special grant cannot be held concurrently with the scholarship, although it is compatible with rent allowance.
